UK women vs USA women
The views and opinions expressed within all Enterprise UK forums are those of the public, and not Enterprise UK (unless where stated otherwise).
Day three of Global Enterpreneurship Week 2009: Women’s Enterprise Day!
Statistics show that women in the USA are far more enterprising than women in the UK.
Why?
Interesting stats:
Only 15% of businesses in the UK are female owned. Around 30% of all US businesses are majority female owned.
If the UK could achieve the same levels of female entrepreneurship as the US, Britain would gain three quarters of a million more businesses

Culture & Caprice's Tops Tips
Interestingly the level of UK women who have gone into self-employment since 2000 has gone up by 20%. We need to remove the stigma and fear of failure in the UK, which just doesn’t seem to be such a barrier in the US. This of course is not just a gender issue. I met with Caprice this morning, for an interview with Channel 5 on Womne’s Enterprise Day and she agreed the culture in the US encourages entrepreneurship and success a lot more than our UK culture. See Caprice’s top tips for being a success in business: (Financial Mail Women’s Forum http://www.fmwf.com/media-type/news/2009/11/caprice-backs-womens-enterpr…) 1. I never went to college, but you have to learn to educate yourself. You need to know every aspect of your business. 2. Be persistant. You will be knocked back, as I have. 3. You have to get people that are qualified, because ultimately they will help you make money. 4. If quality isn’t there your customers will know and you will lose your business. I take a hit on my margins because I’m looking for longevity. 5. You have to learn about cashflow. 6. You always have to think five months down the line. I am a very conservative businesswoman in general. 7. It is still sort of a man’s world. You have to prove yourself. Especially coming from a modelling background I have found it hard to gain credibility.
